Marine geochemistry research position

A full-time research position for a geochemical oceanographer is now open at the Israel Oceanographic & Limnological Research (IOLR).

Scientific Field: Marine Geochemistry.

Job Description: A highly motivated independent researcher in the field of marine geochemistry. The successful candidate is expected to conduct his/her investigations in both the field and the laboratory. The position requires knowledge in operating and analyzing modern marine observational methodologies and modeling.

The successful candidate is expected to cooperate with ongoing research projects at IOLR and to actively seek research grants from national and international funding agencies in order to help support his/her research. 

Requirements: The applicant should hold a Ph.D. degree in natural or exact sciences with strong analytical capabilities. Advantages: post-doc, experience in planning and conducting independent research, management of R&D at national and international level, research in the field of benthic-pelagic coupling, publications in peer-reviewed literature, experience working at sea, in a chemistry lab.

The successful candidate will be positioned at the IOLR - National Institute of Oceanography in Haifa Israel..

          Research position in the field of marine animal genetics

A full-time research position in the field of aquatic animal genetics is available at the National Center for Mariculture (NCM) in Eilat, Israel Oceanographic & Limnological Research (IOLR).

Scientific Field: Selective breeding and genetics of marine fish and shellfish (FS) species undergoing domestication for mariculture.

Job Description: The position involves carrying out genetic research in traditional, selective breeding programs, quantitative and population genetics, molecular biology and genomics, as well as conservation genetics research in fisheries. The successful candidate will be mainly responsible for: (1) Establishment of genetic and epigenetic enhancement programs for commercial FS, (2) Identification of key genes and molecular pathways affecting FS performance and yield, (3) Generation of comprehensive linkage maps and identification of QTLs using microsatellite and SNP markers for economically important traits in FS, (4) Provide bioinformatics services including RAD, RNA and/or whole genome sequencing data analysis in FS. It is expected that the findings from this research will be implemented into both practical genetics in aquaculture and improving the effectiveness of restocking programs including assessment of the interaction between domesticated and wild fish populations. The successful candidate is expected to cooperate with ongoing national and international research projects of other departments at the NCM-IOLR as well as developing a productive and working relationship with the national fisheries.

Requirements: PhD degree. Advantages: training in animal/population genetics, genomics or a closely related discipline. Emphasis on knowledge of the principles of classical, population, and molecular genetics and biotechnology. Ideal candidates should have relevant research experience with parentage analyses focusing on broodstock management of animals, bioinformatics and proficiency in relevant software packages. Experience in genome editing techniques (CRISPR) as well as fish transgenesis would be an advantage. The position also requires experience in planning and conducting independent research, management in development of national and international genetic improvement programs, producing scientific reports and peer reviewed publications of key scientific results as well as providing technical advice and reviews in the areas of aquaculture genetics, conservation biology and the development of national fisheries. The candidate should have good writing and oral communication skills and be proficient in English. Importantly, the candidate is expected to successfully compete for national and international grants to help support his/her research.

The chosen candidate will be required to reside and work full time in Eilat at the NCM - Eilat Laboratory.

          Research position in the field of fish ecology/taxonomy

A full-time research position for a fish ecologist /taxonomist using modern molecular tools is available at the Israel Oceanographic & Limnological Research (IOLR).

Scientific Field: Marine fish taxonomy/ecology.

Job Description: A highly motivated researcher for independent research studies on fish biodiversity, population genetics and taxonomy. The candidate is expected to conduct his/her investigations in the field (including work from fishing/research boats) and in the laboratory. The laboratory works require knowledge in fish traditional taxonomy parameters, traditional and modern molecular tools (such as microsatellites, AFLP, NGS, etc.), the use of modern analysis tools in population genetics, expertise in fish barcoding methodologies (such as the use of COI) and computer skills.

The person filling this position is expected to cooperate with ongoing research projects at the IOLR and to actively seek financial aid from national and international funding agencies to help support his/her research.

Requirements: The applicant should hold a Ph.D. degree (or submitted thesis) in natural sciences, with expertise in fish taxonomy/population genetics/biodiversity. Advantages: post-doc, experience in planning and conducting independent research, management of R&D at national and international level, publications in peer-reviewed literature, experience working with aquatic animals.

The Lake Kinneret Limnological Laboratory (Israel Oceanographic and Limnological Research) is seeking a doctoral research position in interdisciplinary research of hydrometeorology.

The selected candidate will focus on the analysis of rain measurements using signals from microwave link data (cellular antennas).

The research work will be in collaboration with Prof. Pinhas Alpert, Department of Geophysics and Planetary Sciences, Tel Aviv University, Israel.

Skills required:

A desire to learn and engage with physical issues of the environment.

Barcoding of the flora and fauna inhabiting the 
Israeli Mediterranean Sea (from intertidal to the deep sea).

 
The position is for one year with a possible extension for 1-3 years. 
Requirement: a PhD in the last 5 years.

Research position in the field of animal health (fish and shellfish)

Scientific Field: Pathology of aquatic organisms in intensive culture.

Job Description: The position involves diagnostic work on both infectious and non-infectious diseases, identification of viral, bacterial, mycotic and parasitic pathogens, experimental work on disease agents or conditions that develop in intensive marine aquaculture. The candidate is expected to conduct his/her investigations within a broad epidemiological context and develop treatment or prevention strategies.

The position requires extensive laboratory experience, basic knowledge in tissue culture, bacteriology, parasitology, histopathology, familiarity with ELISA and other basic immunological techniques, PCR and other basic molecular techniques, and computer skills.

The person filling this position is expected to cooperate with ongoing research projects at the IOLR - National Center for Mariculture and to actively seek financial aid from national and international funding agencies to help support his/her research.

Requirements: The applicant should hold a degree in Veterinary Medicine, or a Ph.D. degree in natural sciences.
