Goals and objectives

IOLR was established to create and implement a scientific and technological base in everything related to monitoring, research, and sustainable development of the seas and lakes of Israel for the benefit of the national economy and society.  

We aim to play a pivotal role in long-term sustainable development and conservation planning by utilizing natural resources intelligently and preparing adequately for both natural and man-made risks, by:

  • Development and application of scientific tools and data and knowledge bases, through research and monitoring, to support decision-making on the conservation and intelligent and sustainable use of Israel’s marine and lake environment and proper preparation for environmental risks (natural and man-made)
  • Providing advice to the Israeli government in marine and lake sciences, considering the societal and economic needs of Israel and its future prospects
  • Development and operation of essential national research infrastructures (including national information centers) on the marine and lake environment for the purposes of planning, operation, and control of the uses of these resources and for the benefit of future generation
  • Ensure the efficient management and utilization of the national marine and lake resources via establishing and operating crucial national research infrastructures, including national information centers
